WhatsApp follow-up messages: when to send them, plus 6 ready-made templates

A good WhatsApp follow-up arrives at the right moment, says something useful and makes the next step easy. Within 24 hours of the customer's last message you can write freely; after that you need a Meta-approved template and the customer's opt-in. Here's a simple schedule and 6 ready-made templates.

WhatsApp follow-up messages: when to send them, plus 6 ready-made templates

When should I follow up with a customer on WhatsApp?

Reply the same day while the 24-hour window is still open. If they go quiet, send a first follow-up the day after your quote, another with something useful two or three days later, and a final message with a concrete reason a week later. Then stop and reactivate weeks later.

Can I message a customer after 24 hours?

Yes, but only with a Meta-approved template and only if the customer agreed to receive your messages. Utility templates follow up on something the customer asked for, such as a quote or a payment; marketing templates cover offers, cart reminders and win-backs.

How much does a WhatsApp follow-up message cost?

It depends on the category and the customer's country. In Mexico, from October 1, 2026, a utility template costs US$0.0085 and a marketing template US$0.0397. Inside the 24-hour window each reply costs US$0.0085. Meta bills per delivered message, so one complete follow-up beats three short ones.

A follow-up schedule that doesn't annoy

  1. Same day. Answer everything inside the 24-hour window, with complete messages.
  2. Day 1. Remind them of what they asked for (a quote, a reservation, a payment) with a utility template.
  3. Days 2-3. Add something new: availability, a photo, a cheaper option.
  4. Day 7. One last message with a concrete reason to decide, such as stock or a real deadline.
  5. Weeks later. If they didn't buy, reactivate with something relevant to them, not the same message.

5 rules for follow-up that works

  • Only to people who opted in. Outside the 24-hour window, message only customers who agreed to receive your messages.
  • Utility means utility. If a utility template includes a promotion, Meta can classify it as marketing and bill it at that rate.
  • One goal per message. One clear question or button, not three.
  • Personalize with variables. Name, product and date make the message feel written for that person.
  • Know when to stop. If someone asks not to be messaged, respect it immediately and mark it in your CRM.

Frequently asked questions

How many follow-ups should I send?

For most sales, two or three after your first reply, each adding something new. If there's no answer, pause and reactivate weeks later with a relevant reason.

What if Meta rejects my template?

Check that the category is right, that every variable has a sample and that the text isn't misleading. Fix it and resubmit it for review.

Can I automate follow-up?

Yes. You can schedule templates by stage or tag and let the AI answer questions, but review the results and let a person close the sale.

Are follow-ups inside the 24-hour window free?

Not anymore. Since October 1, 2026 Meta bills every message inside the 24-hour window at the utility rate. What stays free is the 72-hour window from Click-to-WhatsApp ads.
