Meta now charges for your WhatsApp replies: what changes on October 1, 2026
From October 1, 2026, Meta charges for every message you send through the WhatsApp API inside the 24-hour customer service window, at each country's utility rate. In Mexico that is US$0.0085 per message, so a thousand replies cost US$8.50. Conversations that start from Click-to-WhatsApp ads still get 72 free hours.

What changed in the WhatsApp API on October 1, 2026?
Meta started charging for two things that used to be free: service messages, meaning your replies inside the 24-hour window a customer opens, and utility templates sent inside that window. Both are billed per message at the utility rate of the customer's country. Messages from Click-to-WhatsApp ads keep their 72-hour free window.
How much does it cost to reply to a WhatsApp message?
It depends on the customer's country. From October 1, 2026, each reply costs US$0.0085 in Mexico, US$0.0068 in Brazil and US$0.0034 in the US and Canada. A thousand replies in Mexico come to US$8.50. Meta offers no volume discounts on service messages, so every reply costs the same.
How do I pay Meta less for WhatsApp replies?
Send fewer messages without answering less: put everything into one complete message, skip standalone acknowledgements like "ok", use saved replies, and bring customers in through Click-to-WhatsApp ads, whose conversations stay free for 72 hours. Also choose a platform that adds no markup to Meta's rates.

Every message your team sends is billed separately. If a rep answers in three short messages, that is three charges. At the October 1, 2026 rates:

- Messages your customers send you. Meta charges for what your business sends, not for what you receive.
- The 72-hour free window from Click-to-WhatsApp ads and Facebook Page call-to-action buttons. Meta confirms these messages stay free.
Everything else is billed per message: marketing templates (inside or outside the window), authentication templates and, from today, your replies.
